My schedule for the rest of August

John Hansell

I’ll be on vacation next week (August 16-20). While I am gone, I have scheduled a guest whisky review each weekday, so there will still be plenty to entertain you. Dominic’s reviews will conclude Monday. Then, beginning Tuesday, Dave Broom’s reviews of Japanese whiskies will begin.

The week after that (August 23-27), I’ll be back here again with more blog posts. I’ll also be going through all the great guest blog submissions I have been receiving.

Then, the week after that (August 30-September 3), I’ll be on vacation again. This is the week I will post up one guest blog each day. Believe me when I say you will enjoy the guest posts. You will not want to miss them.

I have more surprises for you beginning in September, including reviews of all the new whisky books coming out and many more new whisky reviews by me, so don’t go anywhere!

What will I be doing while I’m gone? Hopefully a lot of what you see here in this picture: taking it easy on a beach my wife Amy, with a good drink in my hand. (I also plan on taking my boat out in the ocean and doing a little fishing.)

Still here, but…

John Hansell

We spent Friday getting the next issue of Malt Advocate to the printer (sorry for not posting). I’m taking the day off Monday for some vacation time, but  I’ll be back on Tuesday, though. See you then.

Thanks for the quick responses

John Hansell

You guys are good!

I usually post something up early in the morning. Sometimes, one or more of you have a question about the post–about a given whisky, distillery, or perhaps about a regulation.

By the time I swing back later in the day to take a look at the comments, someone has already answered the question. Thanks! You help make my job here a little easier.

I also want to thank you for your professionalism and self-policing. A large reason why WDJK benefits so many people is because of the comments and discussions that stem from my post, and not the actual post itself.

Warning my friends…

John Hansell

It’s April Fools day. Take any press release, blog post, tweet, etc.,  with a grain of salt.

I promise no fooling here. I think we can trust B.J. on today’s guest post. (We’ll fool them next year, B.J., okay?)

P.S. Well done, Serge (see link above).

Surgery + three days

John Hansell

I’d like to thank all of you for your well wishes–here, on Facebook, Twitter, and via email. I really appreciate it. Since some of you have asked about how I’m doing, I thought I would update you on my situation.

The surgery went well. The procedure was to fix a tear in my medial meniscus. So far, I don’t see any signs of infection or any other complications.

The anesthesia wore off by Saturday afternoon and that’s when the pain really started kicking in, so the weekend wasn’t much fun. I took Vicodin the day of the surgery (Friday) and Saturday. Now it’s just Advils with my meals and at bedtime.

I’m weaning myself off of the crutches and will only use them today when my knee feels really sore or tired. I hope to be off them 100% by tomorrow. And they have me doing some very basic PT exercises.

I just have to be patient (not easy for me), stay the course, and not do anything stupid.

In the interim, B. J. has some great stuff I’ll be posting up. (Thanks again B. J. for filling in here.)

Regarding drinking, I have been enjoying a glass of wine or beer with dinner. I’m staying off the hard stuff for a few more days, though, untill I am completely off the meds.

Slainte!
John

Next week: guest blogging and up-to-date distillery information

John Hansell

As I noted here last Friday, I’m having knee surgery tomorrow, so I won’t be posting tomorrow. Since I’m not sure how I’ll be feeling , I asked B. J. Reed to guest blog for me next week.

Who is B.J. Reed? To quote him: “I’m just a scotch enthusiast from Omaha and part of the group that has been tasting single malts and traveling to Scotland to visit distilleries as part of the Dundee  Dell group since 1998.”

B. J. and the gang know their whisky. In addition to being a regular WDJK contributor, he just returned from Scotland with his group and they toured many distilleries.

So, I thought it would be cool if he could share with us what he (and the group) learned. He’ll have for us each day from Monday-Friday. He’s going to send me the info, and I’ll format it and post it up.

This should be a lot of fun. And who knows? You still might see a post or two from me too during the week as well. Stay tuned!

What whisky-related topics would you like to discuss?

John Hansell

What do you want to chat about? Let me know what’s on your mind.

I try my best to come up with interesting discussion topics, but I’m sure you have some great ideas too. Let us know what they are. The ones I like I’ll use for future postings.

Thanks!

Okay, now here’s what YOU can do.

John Hansell

Back here in January, I asked you what I could do to make WDJK better for you. Many of those recommendations I implemented. And I’m still working on the others.

Now, I would like to ask you to do something that will also benefit you. Tell more people about WDJK. The more whisky enthusiasts reading this blog, the better the conversation and intellectual discussions.

If you have whisky drinking friends, or if you belong to a whisky club, get them involved in WDJK. Give them the link. And it’s an easy one to remember. It’s www.whatdoesjohnknow.com.

Thanks!

When I am going to post. And why.

John Hansell

When you have your own business, it’s so easy for it to consume all your free time if you let it. Even if you like what you do, I don’t think it is healthy. A very well known whisky writer recently told me that, in the past year, he has only taken two days off from work–including weekends.

Not me! I have a family. I have hobbies I love. So, here’s what I plan on doing. I am going to make an effort to post up something every weekday (and you know that I often have multiple posts in one day, like today). But, unless there is something really compelling, I don’t plan on putting up any blog posts over the weekend.

I just wanted to let you know my intentions and make you aware that if you visit WDJK on a Saturday or Sunday, you probably won’t find anything new. And if you check on a weekday, you probably will.

I have a lot of whisky reviews to share with you. I’ll try to put up a review every day next week.

A Whisky Blogging “Code of Ethics”?

John Hansell

I was thinking about this the past few days. The dozens of whisky blogs out there provide a great service to the whisky industry and to whisky enthusiasts. This is the main reason why they received Malt Advocate magazine’s “Pioneer of the Year” award.

But the downside to blogging (in general) is that it is essentially unsupervised. People can basically say whatever they want. I established brief etiquette guidelines on WDJK here  last year  which focused on comments. I wonder if something like this should be fleshed out, expanded, and (hopefully) adopted by all my fellow whisky bloggers?

Do you think this is a good idea? If we did try to create some sort of “Code of Ethics”, what do you think it should include?
