I was getting the '74 @ less than $100US just a few short years ago and now they are asking nearly that for a 12yo. And it's really a shame because this would probably sell well @ $45-$50. I know the '91 is still on the shelf around here @ $69. Nothing at all wrong with Glenrothes, they release some amazing stuff, just too many alternatives at a friendlier price. I agree, Red. The idea is that the quality of the bottlings declined while the prices on them went up. Maybe this will change a few peoples minds. Comment on What is Irish whiskey, really? by Ian McCarthy http://www.whatdoesjohnknow.com/2010/03/12/what-is-irish-whiskey/#comment-21340 Ian McCarthy Mon, 22 Mar 2010 08:38:40 +0000 http://www.whatdoesjohnknow.com/?p=4066#comment-21340 My Nebraska bar was limited to two bottles, and I heard there were only a few cases in the state. For the money, I think it is no better than Powers, but I would gladly take a Knappogue or Redbreast over Paddys any day. I have been told the limited availability has something to do with Pernod-Ricards concern over biting into their own market share. Sell one more bottle of Paddy, sell one less bottle of JJ. Best valued bourbons and each a superior whiskey experience. I would look at OWA 107, OGD 114, Buffalo Trace, FR Small Batch and 1792. Best valued bourbons and each a superior whiskey experience.

Henry, as I am recovering from violent, debilitating food poisoning, I found your very strong statement about sports drinks hilarious. I have been unable to eat solid food for 3 days now, and only started keeping down soup yesterday. You know what kept my body hydrated and provided those very simple sugars necessary for me to function? A sports drink, cut with water. As it turns out, this sports drink cut with water was a very helpful way to cover my most basic bodily needs (short of an IV) while unable to eat, and contained the very same ingredients as other electrolyte solutions such as pedialyte (and was cheaper). Just because you are unable to fathom a use for a sports drink doesn't mean it doesn't exist. “No one, repeat, NO ONE needs to buy sports drinks, unless they’re proud of being taken in by yet another corporate health claim and want to spend money to support an economy based, in part, on food faddisim and the bizarre advertising that helps perpetuate it.”

You'll do fine... probably better than you imagine. What to drink? Primary consideration: something within easy reach. Secondary: something that you can contemplate and savor for an extended period of time (Cuz time will slow down for a while.) Good luck & enjoy! Went through the same thing late last Summer. These new expressions are more like "designer" whiskies. I don't know about the casks in these whiskies, but you're right that it could be more first-fill casks in the mix. There is more textural intensity in these whiskies. Patrick, you make some great points. These new expressions are more like “designer” whiskies. The new expressions are quite different. The older expressions were very smooth, while the new ones are more intense, with an increased spiciness, probably coming from the use of a higher percentage of first fill casks. The 1978 from the new range is excellent and my personal favorite. I hope to taste the new 12 YO next week. I have tasted quite recently the new Founders, as well as the old 8, 10 and 15 yo. Monday night I am hosting a whisky tasting in NYC. After that, I'll be abstaining from alcohol for at least one week: the three days leading up to surgery, the day of surgery, and at least the three days after the surgery, depending on how my recovery goes. But after that, I will be ready for a good dram! Well, I have decided one thing for sure. Monday night I am hosting a whisky tasting in NYC.
